The weekend is upon us! Gonna try and hit the farmers market tomorrow-- it's been a minute! Then I need to lock in on the tedium of the blanket I'm working on for my upcoming niece. It's gonna be so worth it but it's hard to remember that when I have all these ends to deal with. I've still got time but I want to at least have all the individual pieces to be combined done this weekend. I also have reading to catch up on and I need to get some writing done.

Idk how much of this exactly I'll accomplish but I'm shooting for the stars, as usual. If anyone is up for acting as a sounding board for the writing bit, I'd appreciate it. I want to work a little on my mermaid stories and a little on some Transformers fanfic. (I know I don't have a lot of Transformers friends but it's mostly structure/readability stuff I'm needing help with, so.)

Check-In Post - Aug 22nd 2025

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: Share your favourite crafting tip, if you have one.

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

So, you remember how the TFcon hotel blocks got sold out? Well, I emailed the organizers so they could update the web portal. Never got a response but I wasn't really expecting one. I went back to the web portal for something else today and noticed that it still hadn't been updated. Just as a shot in the dark, I tried booking the reservation again-- and it went through! Idk if there was a mistake that got fixed or they added more rooms to the block or what but I'm sure not complaining!

I'm gonna keep watching for availability to open up at the hotel actually hosting the con, since that remains my first choice, but I'm alright with this being how we go ahead. I've got my sister and her fiancé in one room with their younger two and their oldest and I will take another room. She's the most interested in attending with me, so that'll be most convenient. We still need to decide how we're splitting her time between me and her parents-- she thinks she wants to go with me all day each day but there's no way she's actually up for that, lol. Good thing there's a free shuttle between the hotels, though Idk yet how that's going to be scheduled.

Working out the beats of one of the mermaid short stories I've been neglecting and guess what I realized. If you guessed, "two of the most consistent plot points contradict each other," you're a very good guesser. Idk how this hasn't hit me before. It's like I just forgot my own world-building.

I don't expect to get much agreement with this thought

I understand nonbinary as an umbrella term but I kinda hate it as a descriptor. It'd be nice to be something rather than be labeled by what one isn't by default. There's something distinctly unmooring about being forced to identify with what one is not, and I'm not sure who decided on that, but I wish they would have thought this through a little better, idk.

Man, I frikkin hate not being able to remember the titles of books I read as a kid.

For example: I remembered a chapter book about a magical cat-- used to be a witch's familiar, I think-- who I'm fairly certain was called Pandora. She has a collar that has no clasp and ends up living with a couple and their pets after her previous owner... dies? goes away? That, I'm fuzzy on. I don't even really remember what the book is about, might just be a slice of life thing. The main thing I remember is that the humans are late getting home one day and so Pandora uses her powers to open canned food for herself and the other pets. Then the humans get home and the wife insists that unexplainable things have been happening since they found Pandora and this cinches it. While they're talking about the odd events in question, Pandora is grumbling to the other animals about how they pressured her to use her magic in ways that would draw attention to it. The humans confront Pandora directly and she responds by... making something happen, Idk. I cannot remember what, nor can I remember a single detail beyond that point even though I remember finishing the book. Anyhow, the problem with being pretty sure of her name being Pandora is that there is a picture book about a cat named Pandora which is titled Pandora aaand, yeah, that's clogging up my searches something fierce, lol. Gonna have to try to find it based on the other details, which is gonna be annoying. Watch that not even be her name...

Got the first letter back from my prison penpal. He seems like he'll probably be nice to talk to, for the most part. We've got a few interests in common, with enough differences in how we engage with them that it leaves room open for discussion. There is one thing I'm kinda iffy on. I mean, I tend to get a little wary of people who are really into religion anyway, due to my own experiences with it and observances of it, but there are certain ways people talk about it in particular that get me and he's kinda riiight up on one of them? Idk, it's hard to explain what my actual problem is. I actually just tried and then deleted what I wrote, lol.

Honestly, as I'm puzzling over it, I'm realizing how much I've come to rely on having someone's social media account at my fingertips to decide if I want to engage. I mean, that's obviously not a thing in irl conversations but you can ask clarifying questions and get real-time answers when speaking someone irl. This is something else, almost in between, and I have less to go on than I would either online or in person. Feels... uncomfortable, I guess? To not have a ready guide for how to broach certain subjects? Not necessarily in a bad way, though. Idk. I want to write the next letter on Friday to have it in the mail on Saturday, so I've got time to organize my thoughts and decide how to respond.

I think the only other thing bugging me is I forgot to keep a copy of my first letter, so he asks about a couple things I don't quite remember saying.

If you're anything like us, you'll no doubt have a mountain of books that you just never get around to reading. Well, that's where [community profile] thestoryinside comes in - have someone choose your book for you!

The process is simple: join the community, and each month sign up to be partnered with a buddy, who will then choose a book from your 'to read' list. At the end of each month there will be a community post to discuss your thoughts on the book(s) you read!

However, we're putting a twist on the traditional 'pick for me' routine and each month we'll vote on what genre of book we'll be reading; now, of course this is open to personal interpretation, for example, if the genre is horror and you're not a big fan, you could go for a Goosebumps book, or even Twilight. There will be an opportunity in each voting post to ask any questions you might have.

Well, it turns out that I don't have enough black yarn to finish the scarf I've been working on for my niece. Good thing it's cheap, I guess, though I'm not sure what I'll do with the rest of the skein. I'll find something, though. In the meantime, I've started on another scarf for another niece. I don't actually think I have enough yarn for that one either, lol, but it's not like I don't have time to get it. That one's not cheap but at least I can probably use all of the skein if I do a matching ear warmer.

In other crochet news, I'll be participating in a blanket project for charity. The lady who runs Republic of Yarnia will be collected crochet squares to connect into a blanket that will be raffled off. I think this may be a members-only thing but if any of you are interested in participating, I can inquire with her.
